Jack “Mimm” McClure (1914-1969) was an Appalachian moon- shiner. In 2012, country musician Tommy Townsend, a grand- son of McClure, began recreating and marketing the original moonshine recipes legally for the first time. The distillery now offers sales and tours, plus occasional local concerts.

Farmers and growers sell their goods at the Union County Farmers Market every Tuesday and Saturday, June– October. With more than 85 vendors on hand, you’ll also discover artisans, bakers, potters and painters. While you’re there, check out the Hunter-England Cabin. Volun- teers carefully reconstructed the cabin, which was built by John Hunter between 1832-1834 in the Choestoe area. Considered the oldest dwelling in the county, it was origi- nally built of poplar logs, with wooden shutters over the windows and a root cellar beneath the floor.
