In recent years Snowshoe has developed an extensive system of mountain biking trails that lure riders to the mountain in the spring, sum- mer and fall. The Lewisburg Elks Country Club has an 18-hole public golf course. The Greenbrier features five courses: the Old White TPC, the Greenbrier, the Meadows, the Snead, and Oakhurst Links. This event is broadcast nationally on CBS and the Golf Channel, and on Sirius/XM radio. Some of the country’s most chal- lenging whitewater rafting is also nearby, on the New River and Gauley River in Fay- ette County. The Greenbrier Valley is honey- combed with limestone caves and cav- erns, and offers some of the best caving in the Eastern United States. Two commer- cial caves, Lost World and Organ Cave, offer easy access and tours. The West Virginia Cave Conservancy owns cave property and has management agree- ments with other cave owners. Many of these caves are open to the public. The Conservancy is an excellent resource for spelunkers. Running is a popular activ- ity, and organized races take place throughout the year, often benefitting local nonprofits. Biking is also increasingly popular. Appalachian Bicycle Co. in Lewisburg sells, services, and provides information about local trails. Free Spirit Adventures in Caldwell offers similar sales, rentals and services. FAIRS AND FESTIVALS Since 1921 the State Fair of West Vir- ginia in Fairlea has been a family event for many West Virginians. A showcase for state agriculture, the State Fair also serves up plenty of entertainment and education. With livestock competitions, carnival rides, craft exhibits, grand- stand shows, harness racing and food booths, the Fair draws an estimated 200,000+ people to Greenbrier Coun- ty over its run in mid-August. The State Fair is estimated to have a $9 million annual impact on the county. Lewisburg’s busy schedule of events includes two food festivals (Taste of Our Towns in October, and the Chocolate Festival in April), a Liter- ary Festival in early August, and a Win- ter Music Festival in January. The town also hosts the Shanghai Parade on New Year’s Day, and the largest Martin Luther King Birthday celebration in the state in January. Most towns in the county have annual celebrations that showcase community pride. The Ronceverte River Festival in June, the Alderson Fourth of July Celebration, and the Dandelion Festival in White Sulphur Springs on Memorial weekend are among the larg- er festivals. 36 | Greater Greenbrier Chamber of Commerce
